Lenore
âKaleid?â I repeat, staring at the man. He is not at all what I imagined Kaleid would be. And by that, I mean he looksâ¦normal. He doesnât look like the literal son of Skarde (not that I know what Skarde looks like, but Iâm picturing something like a monstrous bat, like Gary Oldman in Dracula). This man looks like some hot Nordic guy with a permanent twinkle in his eye. How could this possibly be Skardeâs right-hand man?
And also, what the hell is he doing here?
Should I be alarmed? I ask Solon, eyeing him. Are you in danger?
The corner of his mouth lifts up. Nice to know you care.
It takes a lot of effort to stop me from rolling my eyes. What time is it anyway?
Six in the morning, he says, and I blink at him in surprise.
What are you all doing up still?
Another hint of a smile. Weâre vampires, Lenore. And Kaleid showing up is a very recent development.
âWell, Lenore,â Kaleid says. âWhy donât you sit down and join us? Weâve been discussing many things that involve you. Only fair if you get to hear about them yourself.â
I give Solon a sharp look. Youâve been discussing me?
Solonâs gaze is sharp in return. Iâve been trying to keep you out of it. For your own good.
Well, fuck. Now Iâm more curious than anything.
I walk around Solon, warily approaching Kaleid. Wolf and Ezra seem relaxed, drinking espresso and lounging in the leather chairs, but their eyes are glued on him, their muscles tight and coiled, ready to strike if he makes a wrong move. Even so, I have no doubt that Solon would beat them to it.
And yet, I donât fear Kaleid as much as I should. I canât explain why. Itâs not so much the easy, casual vibe that heâs putting out thereâwhich may very well be for showâbut more that Iâve been expecting him to show up, even though that makes no sense.
Could this possibly be the man that Jeremias told me about?
âYouâll have to forgive me if I seem a little apprehensive about you being here,â I say, stopping behind the chair where Solon was sitting before. âFrom what I know of you, you work alongside your father, and your father, well, he did try to have me killed.â
Kaleid nods thoughtfully, running his fingers over his chin. âYes, I could see how you might hold a grudge against me because of that. Rest assured, I mean you no harm. In fact, I need your help.â He eyes Solon. âJust as Solon needs my help.â
Solon just grumbles and returns to the chair, gesturing for me to sit down. I do so absently as he pulls over a chair for himself, positioning himself between me and Kaleid, while also trying to keep his distance from me. I have to say, itâs noticeable. Not that Solon has been a very touchy-feely affectionate in public kind of guy, but when heâs trying to stay away from you, you know it.
âSo,â I say, clearing my throat, fixing my eyes on Kaleid, trying to get a read on him.
